With me everything turns into mathematics...
Over the summer I spent some time reading and learning about how to implement math in a new way. Our new math block will be divided into three parts:
1. Number sense- (Where the students will be able to identify and manipulate the value a digit)
2. Problem Solving- With my guidance, students will work in groups or partnerships to work on a story problem. They will have to support their findings with pictures, words and labels.
3. Math Fluency- During this time, students will be able to play games independently or with a partner that allow for practice of math fluency. This is also the time where students may be pulled into a group for differentiated math activities.
What to expect in Chapter 1...
The first Chapter 1, Understanding Addition and Subtraction. They will be learning that adding means joining groups of things together, and that subtracting means taking things away from a group, or comparing two groups to see which one has more. Here are some of the math words they will be learning: addend, sum, difference, fact family. Students are also learning how to use multiple strategies to solve number problems. Some of these strategies are: Write a number sentence, sketch a picture, use a tens frame or number line. I am asking students to SHOW THEIR WORK/THINKING when they are solving these problems. Please be sure to reinforce this with them at home!
